Bolsena lake: information of the territory

The origins date back to Bolsena III century. BC, when after the conquest and destruction of Velzna, today’s Orvieto by the Romans, survivors founded Bolsena. From Velzna Bolsena, Bolsena also inherited the name.
Later during the Roman period Bolsena the name was changed to Volsinii novi, the city was elevated to the rank of City Hall and was home to Lucius Seius Strabo prefect of the praetorium under the Emperor Augustus.
